Product description
Adjustable Gain from 19–75dB – this mic preamp provides powerful gain to overcome the limited preamp boost found in many audio interfaces and mixers. It enhances the clarity and fullness of high-impedance dynamic microphones such as SM58, SM7B, MV7 and brings out details. For condenser mics, use in a quiet studio or pair with our RO-05 Noise Eliminator to reduce ambient noise.
This mic preamp converts mic-level signals to line-level with balanced XLR and 1/4″ TRS outputs, ideal for recording through USB audio interfaces and mixers. Not compatible with mobile live-streaming audio interface or speakers without line inputs. Wireless microphones are also unsupported, as their inherent noise would be amplified.
Turn down the gain on your audio interface or mixer and rely solely on the RO-03 mic preamp. With up to 75dB of gain, it provides more than enough amplification while preventing unwanted noise from double boosting. It can fully replace the gain function of your interface or mixer.
While the mic preamp delivers up to 75dB of clean gain, you should adjust the level based on your setup, mic distance, and recording environment. The goal is to boost your signal while keeping background noise low. Monitor the input in your DAW or watch the Clip light on your audio interface, and keep the level below -12dB for the best sound quality without distortion or clipping.
This mic preamp also accepts guitar or other instrument signals through its 1/4″ input and amplifies them to line level, allowing it to work as an adjustable-gain DI box. Note: when connecting to a guitar amp, be sure to use the Line input only. If the amp has no line input, it cannot be used, otherwise unwanted noise will occur. For connection, use an XLR to TS or TRS to TS cable from the preamp to your amp.
If your recording space isn’t acoustically treated and you’re worried about background noise being amplified, pair the RO-03 mic preamp with our RO-05 Analog Noise Eliminator to achieve a clean, clear sound.
Customers say
Customers find the microphone preamp useful and well-built, with good functionality and recording capabilities. Moreover, they appreciate its gain capabilities, particularly for low-output dynamic and ribbon mics, and one customer mentions it effectively manages vocal volume during recordings. However, the sound quality receives mixed feedback, with some customers reporting clear sound while others find it noisy. Additionally, the power supply receives mixed reviews, with customers noting the phantom power feature.
